Functional Medicine in Wausau

Traditional medicine focuses on treating symptoms, whereas functional medicine takes a holistic approach to healthcare. It considers one’s lifestyle, dietary habits, stress levels, food intolerances, sleep quality, and chemical and hormonal imbalances. In other words, functional medicine looks at each case based on individual needs rather than a one-size fits all approach.

We are all born with a specific genetic code that cannot be altered. Furthermore, we all have genetic abnormalities that create pain and suffering. The exciting news is that we can rewrite the script regarding how these conditions are expressed. These abnormal expressions can be switched off using specific, targeted nutrition protocols, allowing the body to function as intended.

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is personalized, science-based care that treats the whole individual—not just the disease. The body consists of dynamic systems that must properly function and balance to avoid disease and achieve optimal wellness. Functional medicine practitioners study their patient’s bloodwork, genetic makeup, and lifestyles to develop customized treatment plans that lead to improved health and wellbeing.

How does functional medicine work?

Functional medicine utilizes a variety of testing measures geared toward your specific needs. One of the tests our office uses to help identify problem areas is a comprehensive blood lab panel that covers 70 to 80 individual items in the testing protocol. Categories include blood sugar control, digestive function, electrolytes, liver function, cardiovascular markers, inflammation, thyroid, and immune function. Other areas that can be tested are adrenals, heavy metals, and food sensitivities. Testing is performed using saliva, blood, or urine samples. Once identified, we give nutritional recommendations and monitor your progress. In addition, we can interpret labs from other facilities and guide more in-depth lab work that can help pinpoint problem areas. Keep in mind most medical facilities perform only basic procedures while we investigate further to help gain an in-depth picture of your overall body chemistry.

Is functional medicine for me?

If you’re ready to get more involved in your health and wellbeing, functional medicine could be right for you. It requires you to participate more than other forms of medicine. A doctor won’t just hand over some pills and send you on your way. Here are three things you can expect from Dr. Sippl:

  1. An in-depth conversation about your health and your goals. After gathering a complete health history, Dr. Sippl will order the necessary lab work.

  2. An individualized healthcare plan that includes lifestyle changes, nutrition, and essential supplements.

  3. Follow-up appointments with Dr. Sippl to assess progress and keep you on the course to lifelong wellness.

How has functional medicine helped others?

“I had chronic tonsilitis and headaches. Through blood tests, I discovered that I had many food sensitivities. I also found out that I was deficient in Vitamin D and Zinc even though I took vitamins. Once I changed my diet, avoided trigger foods like dairy products, and took the proper amount of key supplements, my condition completely turned around.” ~Darlene S.
